Colibria's Strong Community Message at Global Messaging 2005

17 Jun 2005

Colibria's CEO Keith Gibson delivered a clear community-based message at the Global Messaging 2005 conference, illustrating how the success of community services on the Internet can be translated into huge potential for the mobile sector.

Colibria AS, the leading international developer of mobile instant messaging and presence (IMPS) technology platforms, outlined the steps involved in mobile community building based on IMPS at London's Global Messaging 2005 conference yesterday. Colibria's CEO Keith Gibson elaborated on the mobile community can leverage the enormous success of the existing SMS community to build a dynamic new set of IMPS-based services quickly and economically. Colibria also focused on multiple client operability in the accompanying exhibition, with demonstrations underlining the universal flexibility of the Colibria Companion Instant Messaging and Presence Server.

CEO Keith Gibson explained how IMPS holds the key to building mobile community services now: "We believe that IMPS (IM and Presence) represents an important and accessible service enabler for mobile community services, using existing standardised technology to ensure efficient application development and overcome interoperability issues. At the end of the day, the mobile user is not interested in the technology per se, but in the value-added services they can access. The job of the mobile sector is to bridge the different technologies and concentrate on delivering exciting new services that reflect existing messaging practices and build compelling new community services that are fun and easy to use. If operators start with IMPS now, they have a clear pathway to evolve initial community services through IMS and SIP in future. The key is to launch services now whilst ensuring a future-proof strategy that will accommodate the great potential that SIP/SIMLE-based IM and Presence technology promises for the future."

At the Global Messaging 2005 exhibition, Colibria showed the Colibria Companion Instant Messaging and Presence Server in operation with a variety of IMPS and SIP clients, illustrating the differences in style and functionality that can be offered to the end-user, all delivered via the Colibria Companion's seamless client access and comprehensive IMPS service integration tools. Making its UK debut was the Colibria Cast Media Suite of products, a powerful set of tools that enable mobile campaigns, polls and competitions to be set up easily and quickly.

The Dynamics of Presence
The company's carrier-grade Colibria Companion Instant Messaging (IM) and Presence Server is a scalable, flexible and future-proof solution that supports advanced presence, messaging and multimedia services. Colibria's demonstrations at Global Messaging 2005 encompassed a variety of different clients, with all communication between the devices being handled through the Colibria Companion server:

  • Embedded IMPS and SIP clients from various mobile phone vendors
  • Downloadable smartphone clients
  • Colibria's own PC client, WAP client and SMS client

A powerful messaging and presence enabler, the Colibria Companion delivers certified OMA WV support for presence, instant messaging, groups, shared content and core features. The Colibria Companion comprises the full range of core components, including Presence server; Instant Messaging server; Instant Messaging Gateway (MSN, AOL, Yahoo, and ICQ); Groups server; IMPS PC and Mobile Clients; Communities and Blogs server and clients; and Chat server.

The Colibria Companion contains powerful presence interfaces and APIs that can be used to share presence information between a variety of applications, over and above core Instant Messaging functionality. This supports existing and new applications that use presence information more intelligently, enhancing standard telecom services - for example, SMS, MMS, voice calls, games and communities, where the emphasis is on meeting new friends and encouraging group interaction, and on maintaining efficient contact with staff and work colleagues.
