Colibria’s Presence Report from 3GSM World Congress

Colibria reports success on many fronts at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona.

Throughout the event, representatives from major national and international mobile operators, as well as from MVNOs and smaller regional providers, have been visiting the Colibria stand for demonstrations and discussions.



The news from Telefonica Móviles Espana was that its Movistar Messenger service is being based the Colibria Companion IM and Presence Server platform (see full story), while the 3GSM World Congress also marked the launch of the Colibria Companion IM Gateway (see full story), which provides certified access to the leading messaging services such as MSN, Yahoo!, ICQ and AIM.

The importance of IM and Presence to network operators was underlined in Barcelona by the GSM Association (GSMA), which announced an initiative to make instant messaging as popular and ubiquitous among mobile users as text messaging. As part of this initiative, 15 of the world’s leading mobile phone operators are already planning to rollout instant messaging services that will work across networks. The GSMA is calling this approach to instant messaging Personal IM. Commenting on the GSMA’s announcement, Keith Gibson, CEO Colibira, said:
"The GSMA’s initiative reflects the course that Colibria has been taking for some while, in encouraging the highest degree of interoperability and reliability, across the broadest possible spread of technologies, devices and networks. In calling their approach "Personal IM", the GSMA’s operator members are recognising the value of IM and Presence as an important source of revenue."



In conjunction with Norwegian companies Beepscience, Birdstep Technology and Opera Software, Colibria also co-hosted a Spanish Cava Tasting hospitality event, which enjoyed excellent attendance and the chance to sample the delights of many variants of Spanish Cava. It provided everyone with an enjoyable framework for social networking, and an opportunity to continue the day’s business discussions in an informal atmosphere.
