Colibria Showcases ‘SMS Evolution’ - Mobile IM Solution Builds on Familiar SMS Experience

13 Feb 2007

Enhanced server and client features offer Operators a first step towards full MIM services.

Colibria is showcasing ‘SMS Evolution’ at this year’s 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona: a Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) solution which introduces enhanced MIM features built around the familiar SMS experience and the SMS+ market concept.

The SMS Evolution solution portfolio enables operators to build on the success of SMS to introduce richer, more interactive and personalised features offered by MIM. Key components of the solution include:

SMS Evolution Client
A unique address book client which operates with the familiarity of a standard phone address book, while offering many of the enhanced features of full MIM. The client can be embedded or downloaded onto a user’s device. Features include:

  • Address book integration – from existing phone address book contacts
  • Extended user profile information: pictures, icons, moods
  • Picture send and Shout! - one to many notification prompt
  • Many to many conversation
  • Extended conversation – invite friends into a conversation
  • Typing alerts – notification of a message being typed for you

SMS and MMS Interworking
This solution component enables SMS Evolution users to communicate with existing SMS and MMS users and legacy devices. It drives SMS Continuity, which supports the GSM Association’s Personal IM initiative.

SMS Evolution is added to Colibria’s ‘Elevate’ portfolio of MIM solutions which are underpinned by its leading IMPS based platform and includes advanced server modules through to innovative handset clients. Colibria is focused on providing solutions that ensure messaging interoperability between services and operators.

Colibria Community Gateway Solutions provide opportunities for operators to mobilize existing PC-based Internet IM services such as MSN/Windows Live and Yahoo. Colibria Convergence Messaging Solutions enable SIP based messaging and presence services within an IMS infrastructure. Colibria’s MIM technology already supports 17 operator customers globally, and the company experienced 400% growth in 2006.

Matt Hooper, EVP Marketing, of Colibria, commented: "SMS has grown organically to represent a $50bn plus global market. But as revenues plateau, operators are now looking for the next messaging growth opportunity. MIM leverages the existing familiarity of SMS, but provides a much richer user experience including the ability to share multimedia content, set personalised features such as ‘moods’ and interact with multiple subscribers in a more interactive and immediate context. SMS Evolution allows operators to evolve their SMS subscriber base towards full MIM by introducing enhanced, gradual IM features to an already popular and highly successful communications medium."
