Colibria Strikes Deal with Top Malaysian Operator Maxis

Colibria, a leading developer of new generation Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) Solutions, has announced a deal with Maxis, Malaysia’s leading mobile operator, to enable MIM for its 8.9 million subscribers.

The service will be initially launched to a number of subscribers in June 2007. It will allow subscribers to take advantage of immediate group communications with their friends and colleagues. Colibria’s solution will support SMS continuity, as advocated by the GSMA’s Personal IM initiative, with its SMS Interworking module. This means that Maxis subscribers signed up to the MIM service can send instant messages to those who do not yet use it; these messages will then be delivered as an SMS and vice versa.

Maxis’ Head of Product Development and Infotainment Kugan T, said: ‘‘Our subscribers are some of the world’s highest users of SMS and are proving themselves to be some of the most receptive to new mobile technology. We are confident that this new generation of messaging service will be just as popular with them as SMS. Instant group based communication is a key step in the drive to continually improve our mobile offering.’’

Between now and June this year, we will be working closely with Maxis to put in place Colibria’s Elevate MIM technology which will power the MIM service to ensure a seamless service for all subscribers.’’

The initial launch will be followed by a rapid roll out in the second half of 2007 across Maxis’ full subscriber base. In addition, Maxis and Colibria are working closely with the other major operators in Malaysia to develop interconnections between mobile IM services nationally. This will ensure that all of Malaysia’s 21 million subscribers can communicate with groups of ‘buddies’ instantly no matter what network they are on.
